Behavior-based personalization in web search

Personalized search approaches tailor search results to users' current interests, so as to help improve the likelihood of a user finding relevant documents for their query. Previous work on personalized search focuses on using the content of the user's query and of the documents clicked to model the user's preference. In this paper we focus on a different type of signal: We investigate the use of behavioral information for the purpose of search personalization. Abstract Classification query language (CQL) is a high-level visual query language with a great expressive power. In CQL the processing of ordinary relations and classifications based on transitive relationships is integrated seamlessly. R2D2 at GeoCLEF 2006: A Combined Approach

This paper describes the participation of a combined approach in GeoCLEF-2006. We have participated in Monolingual English Task and we present joint work of the three groups or teams belonging to the project R2D2 with a new system, combining the three individual systems of these teams. We consider that research in the area of GIR is still in its very early stages, therefore, although a voting system could improve the individual results of each system, we have to further investigate different ways to achieve a better combination of these systems.

A Simple Solution for Improving the Effectiveness of Traditional Information Retrieval Systems

In this paper we present a system based on the LSA paradigm to improve the performance of a traditional information retrieval system. The proposed system aims to improve both the recall and the precision capabilities of traditional search engines thanks to a semantic query expansion and a subsequent semantic results filtering. Metadata-Oriented Language Model in Translingual Retrieval of Digital Data

Translingual retrieval relies on processing a source language to retrieve digital document content in a target language. From the perspective of successful browsing digital catalogues, probability of retrieving the full text document in a language other than the query language is close to zero owning to the fact that it is not only the library collection, but especially a problem of matching the index terms with the query keywords which are assumed to be their translation equivalents. The crowd can be an incredible source of information. In particular, this is true for reviews about products of any kind, freely provided by customers through specialized web sites. In other words, they are social knowledge, that can be exploited by other customers. Multimedia Retrieval in a Medical Image Collection: Results Using Modality Classes

The effective communication between user and systems is one main aim in the Multimedia Information Retrieval field. In this paper the modality classification of images is used to expand the user queries within the ImageCLEF Medical Retrieval collection provided by organizers. Our main contribution is to show how and when results can be improved by understanding modality-related challenges. To do so, a detailed analysis of the results of the experiments carried out is presented and the comparison between these results shows that the improvement using modality class query expansion is query-dependent.

A query language for medical statistical analysis

While standard query languages support primarily the definition of single queries, in the evaluation of medical studies one usually formulates large sets of interdependent queries. A set of this type is called an integrated transaction. Our system for the definition of integrated transactions is based on the observation that in medicine a large number of statistical evaluations is founded on a conceptional model that can be structured as a tree. We describe a screen oriented tree editor for the relational data base system DBase and report on our experience with its application in the evaluation of the success rate of PTCA interventions.
